Sorry i haven´t updated for a few weeks! Apparently there are some people wondering if i´m still alive or if I got swept away by one of the hurricanes. well I´M ALIVE and doing well.
Teaching is going well, and i am definitely enjoying interacting with the kids! Its always fun to see how the DF (Dominican Factor, coined by mi profesora muy linda) plays into things. For example if there is a large storm and the power goes out, its dark and the kids can´t see the blackboard. This has happened a couple of times, you just have to do an all out interactive class without writing things on the board, which is easier said than done. Today i was going to teach the 6th grade class, i walked in to find out that the 6th and 7th grade classes were swapping rooms, so there was no class for 6th grade today. Sorry kids! :) You just have to love it. My real joy is talking and interacting with the kids. Most of the girls are infatuated with me and always want to talk with me, and i don´t turn them down because i always want to practice my Spanish. I´ve found that the kids are some of the best teachers, they want to help you learn and they are patient, and if i still can´t understand what they are saying thy finally just laugh. But it is a good feeling to know that most of the kids love English class and the English teacher.
The teachers have been great! they are all so much fun and always there to help me when i need it. Its great because most of the teachers have been trying to learn English, so i try to teach them some English and they all have taught me a ton of Spanish! God has definitely blessed me with them as great friends. Raquel has been a great friend, she is one of the teachers and she works in the library in the afternoon. I help her or just hang out in there with her to talk and practice speaking and listening just about every day. Tuesdays and Thursdays i have been going to an English class that is specifically for the teachers at the school. It has really been fun to help them out, although the first class i did find it a struggle talking in English to them. Everything about it just seemed wrong.
Trying to learn a thousand names in my time here has proved to be one of the most difficult things. I´m trying to learn the names of all my students, all the teachers, the people in the church, everyone i´m playing baseball with and everyone else in between. Its very difficult and the pronunciations can be very tricky as well. That is definitely something i would ask you guys to pray for. It doesn´t feel good to forget peoples names when they ask you :(. Its funny though, in my classes i know the names of all the trouble makers by heart!
Today i went to get my hair cut. That was an interesting experience, i pretty much waited for 2 hours to get my hair cut, but hey it was worth it, i feel a lot better with shorter hair. Tomorrow I am going in the morning to play baseball with the team. I´m excited about that, it should definitely be fun! In practice last week i hit 2 home runs! Yes the field is smaller, but i mean still... We´ll see what happens for my birthday tomorrow, we have youth group tomorrow night and i´m sure everybody will do something for me. I might even be singing with the worship team tomorrow, they wanted help with a song in English. We´ll see if i sing with them more or not, i don´t think they need it, but who knows.
Thanks to Danielle who posted the only comment for my last post. Was it that boring guys? And does anyone know what happened to my parents? They haven´t answered there e-mail and didn´t post any comments, didn´t know if they fell off the face of the earth or got swept away in a hurricane or something like that. Thanks you for all your prayers, please keep them coming! Keep praying for good health as well, i think i´m starting to feel la gripe coming on and i would rather not be sick down here, so please pray for good health. Thanks to all!
In Christ,
Dan
Woah, woah... wait just a second there, Daniel! I replied... just, on your fb wall, not blogger!
ReplyDeleteYou want a comment? Ok, here's your comment:
"BAHAHAHA! yeah, the guys in Taiwan had the same problem with their little... uh... adoring fans? But it's worth the trouble if you learn more of the language!
Ooo, names are definitely a toughy... probably the most broadly spread-out challenge I can think of. I'll definitely pray for you on that one! It makes such a big impact, if you can call people by name =)
How much does a hair cut cost (usd)?
What do you think is making you sick? Stress, conditions, the food, or life? ;)"
There... is that better? XD
Hey Dan,
ReplyDeleteHaha, the power-outages sound fun! :P Being in a different culture makes views on even little things different. I guess you have to be a lot more laid back about a bunch of things.
So baseball is the big sport in the Dominican Republic, then? :) Good job for the two home-runs!
Glad you've made friends with the teachers! :) They probably can guess what you're facing with all the kids every day, too. Gosh, I don't think I could do it. :P
Names are the hardest, aren't they? I'll be praying that God will let all the names come really easily to you! And I"ll pray for you to stay healthy, too. It would suck if you got sick. :P
The last post wasn't boring! No problem for the comment, though. Hope you hear back from your parents soon!

Well, well, well,it's nice to be missed!!As for not answering emails,.... we've been SO busy in prayer for you....there's not much time left. He also forgot to mention that the 1st email was a request for something and we've been hunting that down and the other emails were all of about 6 word long! SO, it's GREAT to read this post and hear what you've been up to and how God has been working! It's great to have kids who love you as a teacher. Then there's the trouble makers, they keep you on your toes, ya gotta love them too. Many times trouble makers are really just seeking attention and that's one way they know they will get it. Try giving them some extra attention. Don't forget the kids in the middle, the shy, quiet, well behaved kids who sometimes don't get noticed. You may have to draw them out by going to them and starting a conversation. Remember, you have a great deal of influence on all these kids, they are watching your every move.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about your 3rd graders from your last post. In general younger kids have a shorter attention span and want to be more active. Maybe you can shorten your daily lesson and then reinforce or review the lesson with them in some sort of game where they can be up and moving more. Plus the more of the 5 senses you bring in the more likely they will remember. Teach them with songs too. Teach them the books of the Bible song, in English. Enough ideas for now. I will pray for God's guidance and wisdom for you. You are doing a great job and making great strides!
Love you!! Mom oxoxoxoxoxoxox
P.S. GREAT on the 2 home runs!! I know how hard you have worked for those! Great accomplishment! OXOXOXO
Thanks for the updates. Love reading about your adventures in the DR! God bless and keep up the great work you are doing.
ReplyDeleteHey Dan!
ReplyDeleteIt's been really quiet here & Ellie really misses you! I think she wants me to carry her around like you do! It's starting to get cold here, low 50's at night, 60-70 during the day. Sure glad we planted this bumper crop of peppers for you! What are we going to do with them? It's also very amazing how dirty the house does not get with just Mom & I. I do miss you & know that we are praying for you so far away!
Love,
Dad
Daniel, I've posted comments and did the last time too. Don't know if the cyberspace goonies are doing something or not. Keep the posts coming more frequently. It was an EXCELLENT post this time -- you mentioned the profesora muy linda. We'll miss you for the first day of Spanish class. Siempre -- Tia y Profe
ReplyDeleteOh yeah how did Spanish class go? I miss the singing, but i still sing the songs down here. :)

All the girls are infatuated with you? Haha. Sorry just had to make a comment about that one.
ReplyDeleteRemembering names is probably one of the hardest things, but its such a blessing to the people when you remember and can pronounce their names. I will be praying for you!
First time I tried to get my hair cut in Germany they tried to rip me off, thinking I was a stupid foreigner, I showed them!
Stay healthy!
In Christ,
